Around Town: A sad day for our town

There are tragedies in life. Some tragedies are random. Unpredictable.

This one could have been prevented.

Two months ago, LCHS sophomore Malia Mailes presented a 46-page report to the La Canada Flintridge City Council outlining the staggering number of truck crashes at Angeles Crest and Foothill Boulevard and disputing a Caltrans official's claim that Angeles Crest is not a truck route.

Then Mayor Pro-tem (now Mayor) Laura Olhasso called the report "a great legacy."

But now we have a legacy of a different sort. As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, as I write this, there are two dead and 14 injured, three of them critically.

All over town tonight, people call their friends. Checking in.

Are you OK?

"I was four cars behind the truck."

"My daughter was nearby."

When will they finally do something?

Checking in.

May the deceased be at peace and strength to their loved ones.

May the injured be healed. La Cañada Valley Sun: La Cañada Flintridge, California
